Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a religious formation program for young children. Developed in the 1950s by two women in Italy it follows the Montessori principles of education and the idea that children are born in love with God and can find true joy in that relationship. CGS gives children the opportunity to encounter the parts of our Catholic faith that especially resonate with them. This opportunity is provided through the atrium which is a special place created for the child. In the atrium the children hear presentations based on the liturgy as well as scripture and then work with corresponding materials. Catechists, who attend a number of hours of training, give the presentations by proclaiming scripture, naming objects, and asking open ended questions. The catechist provides an opportunity for prayer and then invites the child to work with the materials. This give the child time to ponder what was presented to them and develop an ownership of their faith. CGS works to meet the child where they are in their religious formation and ultimately to "unlock" the religious potential of the child.
